Marco Polo's China

An overland journey through China old and new: historic Beijing, glittering Shanghai, beautifully preserved imperial towns and temples of centuries past.

Trip Overview
  • See China’s famed highlights, including the Great Wall and 7,000 Terra Cotta Warriors.
  • Visit the ancient Buddhist caves and carvings at Datong and Longmen.
  • Experience the villages, monasteries and temples of China’s less-traveled side.

In the hinterlands beyond China's eastern metropolises lies a beguiling heritage: ancient capitals of empire, Buddhist cave temples, serene pagodas, and sacred mountains draped in mist. This unique overland trip via rail and road connects a string of lesser-known destinations on a cross-country weave from Beijing to Shanghai. Following the lead of Venetian adventurer Marco Polo who was captivated by China during his 13th-century wanderings, we, too, discover an astonishing array of landscapes, historic treasures, revered traditions and intriguing cuisine. Though contemporary China throbs to the beat of global commerce and culture, old China still awaits on this journey back in time.
